There has been a lot of scuffles in the Ghanaian Parliament between the Members of Parliament elect for the past 12 hours during the election of the speaker for Ghana’s 8th parliament.
The election is between Prof. Mike Oquaye of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Mr. Alban Bagbin of the National Democratic Congress. (NDC)
The first confusion happened when some of the members elect were displaying to the house their ballot cast, which is supposed to be done in secrecy. Members of the NDC MPs elect opposed this action which lead to the disruption of the election process, which later attracted the presence of the military.
The above incident was resolved, and calm was restored into the house, but the worse happened during the counting process when the NPP Mp elect for Tema West constituency, Mr. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah snatched some ballot papers and started running out of the house with them, when he noticed his favorite candidate – Prof. Mike Oquaye was losing.
he was apprehended and the papers were taken from him, but the NDC believes their Hon. Alban Bagbin is the winner of the election, and should be declared speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament of her fourth republic.
However, Hon. Alban Bagbin has been declared the speaker of parliament elect.
